Mass General Brigham residencies and fellowships

Mass General Brigham trains physicians each year in nearly all specialties and subspecialties of medicine. Some programs are offered independently by one of the Mass General Brigham hospitals while others provide integrated training that draws on the strengths of more than one Mass General Brigham institution.

Graduate Medical Education Office

The Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME) serves to optimize the quality of the education and learning environment for residents and clinical fellows by:

  • Partnering with institutional leaders to optimize the approach, infrastructure, and support for trainees and their programs, including program leadership
  • Providing core educational programming through workshops and retreats for trainees, program directors, and program staff
  • Implementing strategic initiatives to enhance educational quality and support trainees’ career development, such as the Mass General Brigham Centers of Expertise for residents and fellows
  • Supporting GME program improvement through program reviews, accreditation-related activities, and the involvement of Education Specialists
  • Addressing issues related to resident and fellow quality of life, directly and via support of the Mass General Brigham Resident/Fellow Well-Being Council
  • Supporting the work of Mass General Brigham and hospital-based GME committees
  • Providing forums for communication with internal constituencies and serving as the liaison to national organizations
  • Serving as the essential liaison between the Sponsoring Institution (Mass General Brigham) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) by providing crucial administrative oversight to ensure that the institution and ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs adhere to specific educational, clinical, and learning and working environment standards to maintain high quality educational programs.

Centers of Expertise

The Centers of Expertise are innovative cross-specialty educational opportunities that complement clinical training by providing residents and fellows with exposure to three important areas of health care delivery: global and community health, health policy and management, and medical education.

Global and Community Health
Addressing the needs of vulnerable and underserved populations, the Center of Expertise in Global and Community Health encompasses research and care delivery in varied resource-poor settings, including nationally and internationally. This Center addresses quality and safety as well.
Health Policy and Management
The Center of Expertise in Health Policy and Management connects trainees with senior leadership and policy experts within Mass General Brigham and the Harvard community to offer opportunities to understand the range of leadership roles and complexity of decision making in academic health care management, as well as the impact of political and economic forces that shape the future of the health care market. This Center of Expertise also covers quality and safety.
Medical Education
Encompassing clinical teaching, medical education scholarship, and education administration and leadership, the Center of Expertise in Medical Education creates high-impact opportunities for trainees. This Center also encompasses quality and safety.

For Leaders

Process and application

The process of starting a GME program requires input from the GME office and education committees. Proposals for new residencies and/or fellowship programs are reviewed and approved by the GME Office on behalf of the Mass General Brigham Graduate Medical Education Committee. More information on new program development, including the Part 1 application form, can be found on the GME SharePoint site (login required), which is accessible to all Mass General Brigham employees.

Trainee contracts

Mass General Brigham requires that a contract be issued to each resident and clinical fellow annually. Below are templates and resources for generating and issuing contracts.
Contract requirements
Mass General Brigham requires that a contract be issued to each resident and clinical fellow annually. Matriculants must sign their initial contract by July 1st (or August 1 for some fellowships), or upon arrival if they started the program earlier or were accepted into the program after the start of the academic year. Returning residents and clinical fellows should sign a renewal contract prior to the expiration of their current contract. At this time, you do not need to issue a contract to candidates who have just matched to your program, but will not matriculate until July 1, 2027 or later. If you issue an offer letter it should contain the following text and a copy of the USMLE Completion Requirements Policy: “This offer is contingent upon satisfactory completion of the hospital credentialing process and satisfaction of the enclosed USMLE Completion Requirements Policy, and other licensure policies that may be in effect at the time.”
Trainee contract templates
  1. Contract template for residents and ACGME-accredited fellows
This template should be used to generate contracts for all residents, and for clinical fellows actively enrolled in an ACGME program—that is, the fellow’s program year is accredited by the ACGME, and they will be listed as "active" in the ACGME ADS system.
  2. Contract template for non-ACGME clinical fellows
This template should be used to generate contracts for clinical fellows in training programs or training years that are not accredited by the ACGME.
  3. Contract documents in Microsoft Word version can be accessed on the GME SharePoint site (login required).
  4. Contract attachments
Each template specifies required policy and other attachments. The institutional resident supervision and work hours policies apply to trainees in all programs. You should also give each trainee a copy of your program-specific Supervision and Work Hours Policies. A list of the policies and benefit summaries to be attached to the contract are in the sections below.
Generating individual contracts
  1. Throughout each template there are instructions about how to fill in the preceding blank area. The instructions appear as italicized, shaded text; delete these instructions before printing each contract.
  2. Prepare an original and a copy of the contract with copies of all attachments, and send to the trainee to sign. The trainee should send back the original signed copy to retain in their program folder. Ensure that the Department Chair and/or the Training Program Director also sign both copies. This can be done electronically.
Trainee salaries

The Mass General Brigham Housestaff Salary Scale for AY 26–27 applies to all residents and fellows who are represented by the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR). View current trainee salaries here.

Additional guidelines for housestaff salaries and benefits:

  • Salaries for each PGY level should be the same across all programs/all departments; any proposed exceptions should be referred to the GME Office for consideration by the Graduate Medical Education Committee.
  • Departments may provide variable academic funds to trainees for reimbursement of educational materials/activities, such as books and travel.
  • Loans may be made to trainees in the event of unusual circumstances, with oversight from the institutional or physicians’ organization.
Policies attached to the contract and medical staff bylaws

Copies of the policies listed below must be attached to the contract. They, as well as copies of the medical staff bylaws referenced in the contract, can be found here.

Director and accreditation manager assignments

Each clinical GME program at the Mass General Brigham hospitals is linked primarily to one of the GME directors (Dr. Berkowitz or Dr. Nadel).

While Dr. Eric Nadel is the Interim "DIO" (Designated Institutional Official) for all ACGME-accredited programs at Mass General Brigham institutions, individual programs should refer all matters requiring DIO review to the GME director and accreditation manager for their specialty.
