Welcome to the Mass General Brigham Integrated Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship!

Our mission at Mass General Brigham is to train the next generation of leaders in obstetric anesthesiology. Our program combines the best of high-risk clinical exposure, academic rigor, and true multidisciplinary collaboration, with a strong emphasis on developing fellows into expert consultants, educators, and innovators in the care of complex obstetric patients.

Fellows obtain a world class education at two renowned hospitals. At the Brigham, fellows gain experience in a high-volume, high-acuity labor and delivery environment with extensive exposure to complex maternal comorbidities, placenta accreta spectrum, and a growing fetal surgery program in collaboration with Boston Children’s Hospital. At Massachusetts General Hospital, fellows experience a complementary clinical model with high-risk consultation services, advanced cardiac disease in pregnancy, and innovative perioperative systems. Together, these two environments provide unmatched breadth and depth of clinical training and exposure.

Education is a cornerstone of our program. Our fellows participate in a weekly structured, longitudinal didactic curriculum, which is supplemented by multidisciplinary conferences, simulation, ultrasound training, and dedicated research education.

Mentorship is one of the greatest strengths of our program. Each fellow is supported by nationally and internationally recognized faculty committed to individualized career development. Our fellows consistently contribute to national scholarship and present at leading conferences, reflecting the strength of our academic environment.

We are committed to fostering a supportive, collaborative culture that prioritizes wellness, professional growth, and community. We are excited to welcome trainees who are passionate about advancing the field of obstetric anesthesiology and improving maternal outcomes.

Accolades & Program Accomplishments

The Mass General Brigham Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship builds on a longstanding tradition of excellence in clinical care, education, and scholarship across two leading academic institutions. Our faculty are nationally and internationally recognized leaders in obstetric anesthesiology and our fellows consistently present impactful research at national meetings, including the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) annual meeting, where they are regularly recognized for excellence in research and patient safety. In addition, our trainees have successfully secured competitive funding to support scholarly and global health initiatives. These accomplishments reflect the fact that our program is deeply committed to advancing the field and to preparing our fellows for leadership roles in obstetric anesthesiology.

Curriculum and Clinical Experience/Education and Training

Our fellows take part in a comprehensive clinical experience across Mass General Brigham institutions, with exposure to a wide range of obstetric and multidisciplinary care environments.

Skills/Competencies

Our fellowship is designed to develop fellows into expert consultants in obstetric anesthesiology, with progressive autonomy throughout the year.

Fellows graduate with advanced expertise in:

  • Comprehensive peripartum anesthetic management, including high-risk maternal and fetal conditions at our quaternary care centers
  • Multidisciplinary care coordination with obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, and critical care teams
  • A strong foundation in obstetric anesthesiology through a structured, longitudinal didactic curriculum, including weekly protected teaching sessions, simulation training, and journal clubs
  • Educational skills, including supervision of trainees and development of lectures
  • Academic and scholarly development, supported by a structured research curriculum and close mentorship to produce an impactful scholarly project

By the completion of training, fellows are prepared to independently manage complex obstetric patients, lead multidisciplinary teams, and contribute meaningfully to clinical care, education, and research in obstetric anesthesiology.

Words from Our Alumni

“Completing my Obstetric Anesthesia at Brigham and Women’s Hospital was one of the best decisions I could have ever made. I trained with some of the brightest minds and most effervescently passionate people in our subspecialty, perfecting neuraxial techniques and being exposed to some of the most challenging pathologies in obstetrics while simultaneously deepening my understanding of research methodologies and improving my ability to present my findings. Upon graduating, I felt armed with the tools and knowledge to be able to care for any obstetric who presented to my labor and delivery unit. I think back to that year on a daily basis, and with the fondest affection.” - Jordan Francke, M.D., M.P.H. Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, Associate Program Director, Obstetric Anesthesia Fellowship, Columbia University Medical Center; BWH Obstetric Anesthesia Fellow Class of 2025

“The Obstetric Anesthesiology Division cultivates a family-like environment where the fellows are supported, valued, and encouraged from the beginning. Fellows grow and develop their OB anesthesia attending skill set, clinical acumen, and knowledge through teamwork, mentorship and genuine investment from the attendings. It is truly a unique and special place to train as a fellow.” Allison Mootz, M.D. Assistant Professor, Associate Fellowship Program Director, UT Southwestern Medical Center; BWH Obstetric Anesthesia Fellow Class of 2024
