Overview

The Burke Advanced Fellowship in Pulmonary Heart Disease at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a one-year clinical fellowship (with optional second research year) offering in-depth experience in the clinical, research, and educational activities of Harvard Medical School and BWH. The training program focuses on the evaluation and management of patients with diseases of the right heart system including pulmonary vascular disease, congenital heart disease, and end-stage lung disease. Faculty are part of a multidisciplinary group sponsored by the Center for Pulmonary Heart Disease. Graduates are leading major PH centers across the US in both pulmonology and cardiology.

Requirements

Completed ACGME-accredited fellowship in either pulmonary and critical care medicine or cardiovascular medicine. Application deadline: September 1. Interviews granted on rolling basis by receipt date.

Curriculum

Core competencies include pathophysiology, assessment, diagnostics, and treatment of pulmonary heart diseases. Training covers: right heart failure due to pulmonary vascular diseases and end-stage lung disease; left heart failure management; arrhythmia mechanisms and management in pulmonary heart disease; donor management and transplantation procedures (lung and heart-lung); mechanical circulatory devices (VAD, ECMO); rest/exercise right heart catheterization with invasive CPET; imaging (echo, CT, MRI, PET); pulmonary function testing; and angiography. Clinical rotations in inpatient and outpatient settings with the pulmonary vascular disease program.

Research Experience

Full funding available for second-year research fellows. Opportunities across basic science, translational science, and clinical research in all aspects of pulmonary heart disease. Faculty assist in grant applications and project support. Fellows are encouraged to participate in contemporary and investigational therapies for pulmonary hypertension.
