Cardio-oncology and Amyloid Heart Disease Fellowship

The 1‑yr Fellowship program trains cardiologists to manage cardiovascular diseases related to persons with active or prior cancer and with amyloidosis. Fellows will receive expert training in the diagnosis and management of patients with cardiac amyloidosis & oncology related cardiotoxicities and cardiovascular disease among patients with active or prior cancer. This includes inpatient and outpatient rotations at BWH and MGH, exposure to advanced imaging.

Overview

The 1‑year Mass General Brigham Cardio‑Oncology and Amyloid Heart Disease Fellowship (optional 2nd research‑focused year) trains cardiologists to manage cardiovascular disease in patients with cancer and cardiac amyloidosis. Fellows gain competency across amyloidosis and oncology fundamentals, cardiotoxicities, risk assessment before/during/after therapy, and advanced imaging, with integrated inpatient and longitudinal outpatient experiences at BWH and MGH under core faculty leadership. Training includes didactics, faculty mentorship, and completion of a research project, with an optional second research-focused year.

Requirements

Completion of an ACGME‑equivalent general cardiology fellowship (3 years).

Curriculum

Ambulatory (12 months)
  • Cardio‑oncology clinic: ½‑day/week x 6 months at BWH and ½‑day/week x 6 months at MGH (new and longitudinal patients).
  • Amyloidosis clinic (BWH): ½‑day/week x 12 months with exposure to clinical trials operations.
Inpatient (2 months)

Cardiology consult services: 1 month BWH (Oncology units/ICUs/surgical floors) + 1 month MGH (ER, Oncology and non-Oncology floors, ICU).

Advanced Imaging
  • Echocardiography: at least 12 half‑days (≥200 amyloid/cardio‑oncology‑related studies anticipated), including strain and myocardial work.
  • Cardiac MRI: ≥12 half‑days (≈50 studies; amyloidosis, ICI myocarditis, masses).
  • Nuclear/CT: Technetium‑PYP with CT‑SPECT (≥50 studies read; review of external studies to learn pitfalls).
Didactics

Cardiology Grand Rounds (BWH/MGH), BWH CV Clinical Case Conference (fellow presents 3×/year), IC‑OS weekly webinar, CV Imaging Grand Rounds or Advanced Heart Disease conference (topic‑dependent).

Clinical Scope & Patient Populations

Fellows manage CV issues in solid and hematologic malignancies, primary cardiac tumors, therapy‑related complications (e.g., cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, hypertension, vasospasm/ischemia, thromboembolism, pericardial disease), survivorship care after cardiotoxic exposures (e.g., anthracyclines, radiation), and comprehensive amyloidosis care (AL, hereditary and wild‑type ATTR, rarer forms), including advanced HF, arrhythmia management, and device/procedural decisions.

Sites, Supervision & Evaluation

Training spans BWH and MGH with direct early supervision transitioning to indirect oversight as competency grows. Fellows receive ongoing feedback, formal evaluations every 3 months in clinic, biannual meetings with program directors.

Research Experience

Fellows design and complete a clinical or, translational project in cardio‑oncology or amyloidosis, with 6 weeks of protected research time plus flexible effort during clinical gaps. Findings are presented to core faculty at year’s end, with manuscript preparation encouraged post‑program. An optional second year allows in‑depth research (≈9 months) with limited longitudinal clinics.

How to Apply

  • Commitment to the full 12‑month curriculum.
  • Interest and/or prior exposure to oncology, advanced imaging, or amyloidosis is advantageous.
  • Standard materials: CV, personal statement detailing career goals in cardio‑oncology/amyloidosis, and 3 letters of recommendation, eligible for MA license.

Do you accept applicants with no U.S. clinical training?
Yes, we will review all applications; however, preference is given to applicants with U.S. clinical experience.
Do you offer visa sponsorship?
Yes. We currently sponsor ECFMG J1 visas or the continuity of H1B visas.
How many fellows are accepted each year?
1-2 fellows.
Are fellows union employees?
Yes.
Does the program offer relocation support?
