Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship

As part of the Mass General Brigham Heart and Vascular Institute, our combined ACGME‑accredited Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship unifies the excellence of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. This integrated program maintains our mission to train exceptional clinical cardiologists and future leaders in cardiac electrophysiology, offering comprehensive clinical, procedural, and research training across both institutions.

Overview

Our Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology (CCEP) Fellowship is dedicated to training future leaders in the field of cardiac electrophysiology. The program prepares fellows to excel as sub‑specialists in the care of patients with cardiac rhythm disorders while providing a strong foundation in clinical, translational, and basic science research.

The combined structure allows fellows to continue benefiting from the depth of experience at each site while gaining:

  • Broader exposure to advanced cardiovascular procedures and subspecialty expertise across institutions.
  • Enhanced access to shared resources supporting clinical research.
  • Expanded professional development opportunities through Harvard Medical School affiliation.

We anticipate that our graduates will pursue a variety of career paths, including academic electrophysiology—whether focused on clinical care, clinical investigation, or basic science—as well as advanced clinical practice or roles within industry. We expect that 50% or more of our fellows will enter academic positions upon completion of training.

Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of an ACGME‑accredited (or equivalent) three‑year Internal Medicine residency.
  • Completion of a three‑year ACGME‑accredited Cardiovascular Disease fellowship.

Curriculum

Our Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology (CCEP) curriculum provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis and management of cardiac rhythm disorders through four core clinical components:

  • Catheter Ablation in the electrophysiology laboratories.
  • Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIEDs), including pacemakers and ICDs.
  • Inpatient Cardiac Arrhythmia Consult Service.
  • Outpatient Cardiac Arrhythmia Clinics.

Fellows participate in structured didactics covering basic and clinical electrophysiology, clinical pharmacology, and research fundamentals. Early in training, each fellow selects a research project and is paired with a faculty preceptor for mentorship and scholarly development.

The curriculum is designed to ensure competency across all ACGME core domains and emphasizes critical thinking, clinical decision‑making, and independent learning. Fellows gain extensive experience caring for patients with supraventricular and ventricular tachyarrhythmias, bradyarrhythmias, unexplained syncope, and heart failure, with opportunities to manage both acute and chronic conditions.

Research Experience

At the start of training, fellows identify at minimum one or more research projects that are of interest to them. A faculty preceptor is then assigned to the fellow to supervise and assist in the completion of these projects and to coordinate additional research training throughout the year. The project is guided through aspects of project formulation, funding, IRB submission, patient data collection, analysis, and publication, with close supervision by the faculty. Fellows are encouraged to give oral presentations of their projects at the annual New England Electrophysiology Society Fellows’ Competition, as well as at the annual international Heart Rhythm Society meeting. Fellows are also strongly encouraged to submit completed projects for publication, when appropriate. shorten for website.

Do you accept off-cycle applications?
No. We follow the academic year: July 1 – June 30.
Do you accept applicants with no U.S. clinical training?
Yes, we will review all applications; however, preference is given to applicants with U.S. clinical experience.
Do you offer visa sponsorship?
Yes. We currently sponsor ECFMG J1 visas or the continuity of H1B visas.
How many fellows are accepted each year?
We accept 6 or 7 fellows in alternating years.
Can I do my research year at another institution?
Research can be conducted at any Mass General Brigham (MGB) institution, although preference is for projects based at MGH or BWH.
How long are fellows expected to rotate at each site?
Fellows rotate in 3‑month blocks at either MGH or BWH. During each block, they participate in small‑group, in‑person teaching sessions and receive mentorship from faculty at their current site. In addition, fellows complete a 1‑week WRVA rotation during their BWH blocks.
Are fellows’ union employees?
Yes.
Does the program offer relocation support?
No. However, the hospital provides a yearly stipend to trainees, currently at $10,500, to help offset expenses.
Are interviews in person or virtual?
In line with current institutional guidelines, all interviews continue to be conducted virtually.
