Overview
Since 1988, The Deland Fellowship has been a premier method for experienced healthcare professionals to build foundational leadership skills through unprecedented exposure to and collaboration with system leadership across both hospital administration and academic medicine. This fellowship is a one-year administrative experience based at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, utilizing a combination of executive mentorship and project-based skill development to prepare fellows to find an impactful and meaningful role within a health system.
This fellowship is specifically tailored for working professionals looking to expand and build valuable administrative and leadership skills to enable further progression within the healthcare management space.
Deland Fellows work with administrators, faculty and staff at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital and the Mass General Brigham system on projects which are compatible with and tailored to their background and interests and meet the needs of the organization. Opportunities for study include:
- Participation in leadership meetings and assignment to high-impact projects spanning a range of topics and clinical areas across the organization
- Hands-on exposure to clinical work, including clinical rounds, observations, and participation in quality rounds
- Experience in management, operations, finance, marketing, and community relations
- Experience working within an integrated health care system of academic and community-based hospitals
- Professional development opportunities, including conference participation and internal and external training
Deland Fellows are mentored by a member of the senior leadership team and are supervised by the Deland Fellowship Executive Sponsor.
Fellows receive an annual salary that is competitive relative to other administrative fellowships and similar positions. As a full-time employee of BWH, the fellowship is benefits eligible. BWH is proud to offer a very competitive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, opportunities for professional development, discounts on public transportation, cultural and sporting events. For further information, see the Careers at Careers: Benefits page. Relocation costs for Administrative Fellows are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Yes. The Fellowship is tailored to provide clinical understanding for non-clinicians and an understanding of management disciplines for clinicians. Building successful collaborative relationships between clinicians and administrators is a key focus of the fellowship experience.
Fellows spend time in the first few months of their fellowship year observing in settings throughout the organization – including clinical areas. This gives Fellows a better understanding of clinicians' work, the challenges and dynamics of the clinical environment, how the entire hospital system functions. Individuals who enter the Fellowship with some prior clinical experience can choose to focus their time observing in less familiar clinical settings or other administrative areas.
There will be an informational Webinar held on Monday, September 14th at 6:00 PM, and a 2nd informational Webinar held on Wednesday, September 23rd, at 7:00 PM.
