MGH Administrative Internship
Email: MGHAdminIntern@mgh.harvard.edu
Overview
The Massachusetts General Hospital provides an excellent learning environment for healthcare management students interested in careers in hospital leadership. Each summer, Mass General accepts a limited number of master’s degree students for administrative internship opportunities. Selected students gain exposure to the complex operations of a major academic medical center, become engaged in a mix of observational experiences and project-based work, and receive guidance and mentorship from experienced healthcare executives.
Administrative interns join a specific Mass General department for the summer and are precepted by an Administrative or Executive Director. Preceptors provide students with a broad range of learning opportunities depending on the priorities of the department, as well as the student’s professional interests. Sample activities include:
- Attending high-level management meetings
- Observing clinical care and speaking with caregivers or patients
- Developing process flow maps of current processes and making recommendations around improving processes
- Managing and analyzing data to inform department strategy
- Supporting the capital budget process and/or evaluating prospective products or vendors
- Attending grand rounds or other medical education lectures
- Reviewing and completing financial analyses and statements
- Assessing and summarizing new business opportunities
- Supporting accreditation applications and site visits
- Participating in clinical simulations and facility tours
- Meeting with senior leadership
Interns meet regularly with their preceptor(s) to discuss their progress. In addition, interns meet with each other and other preceptors to share information about their projects and discuss current trends, issues and opportunities in healthcare.
Please note that students that apply for and/or complete an administrative internship at Mass General are at neither an advantage or disadvantage if they later choose to apply to the post-graduate Administrative Fellowship Program.

“My time spent with the MGPO PM&R and Spaulding Rehab Associates as an MGH intern proved truly invaluable both professionally and personally. I had the opportunity to lead several projects across different aspects of health delivery that were ultimately implemented into service lines. MGH interns receive unprecedented access to some of the best leaders in the industry who are passionate about passing their knowledge on. I would highly recommend the MGH intern experience for anyone considering it.”

“The Mass General Administrative Internship gives its interns a uniquely personal setting that allows interns to get a true insight into the running of one of the nation's best healthcare providers. It is evident that MGH cares about its interns - Senior Leaders take time to share their experiences and meet the small group of interns 1-on-1. My preceptors entrusted me with meaningful projects that helped me grow as an aspiring healthcare administrator, as well as pursue projects I believed in. If you're considering an Administrative Fellowship, this internship definitely gives you an incredible, concise version of the experience.”

Pathology and Perioperative Services
“Participating in the administrative internship at MGH this past summer was truly an eye-opening experience. I spoke to not only leading healthcare executives, but also renowned physicians and really got a sense of where the market is heading and what trends to look out for as I start my career. Undoubtedly, the best part of the summer was the leadership meetings that Melissa and Doug prepared for us which put us in the room with dozens of C-suite members and VPs of different departments to really understand MGH from a macro lens. We had a leadership meeting just about every day of the summer and it gave me a comprehensive top-down view of the organization. Conversely, as a Perioperative Services intern, I got to see day-to-day operations in the CSPS unit and even got to shadow a lot of surgeries in an effort to find areas for process improvement. As a Pathology intern, I also got to see a lot of on-the-ground operations with specimen preparation and slide technicians to understand MGH from a bottom-up approach. Overall, the internship contributed to my growth as a healthcare leader and I will use these insights as I go through my career.”

“My time as an MGH administrative intern was nothing short of fantastic! The opportunity to engage in leadership meetings, delve into meaningful projects, and embark on eye-opening system-wide tours truly enriched my understanding of healthcare leadership. One remarkable aspect of this experience is the tremendous visibility I had to hospital and system-wide leaders. Being able to interact with and learn from these accomplished professionals was truly invaluable. Moreover, what made this internship even more special was the sense of family and fun that developed between our internship cohort. We supported each other, learned together, and enjoyed a close-knit bond that made the entire journey not only educational but also incredibly enjoyable. This internship has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in shaping me into a confident and capable healthcare leader.”
