Mass General Brigham Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship

The Mass General Brigham Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship provides comprehensive training in EEG, EMG, and advanced neurophysiologic diagnostics across world-class academic hospitals.

Overview

The Department of Neurology at Massachusetts General Brigham is proud to offer the Mass General Brigham (MGB) Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship, a comprehensive training program designed to prepare physicians for specialized practice in clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy care.

The program integrates the strengths of the Clinical Neurophysiology programs at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, providing fellows with a collaborative, multi-site training experience within one of the nation’s leading academic neurology departments. Through exposure to both adult and pediatric neurophysiology, fellows gain experience caring for a diverse patient population and managing a wide range of neurologic disorders.

Fellows receive advanced training in electroencephalography (EEG), epilepsy monitoring, electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies, and inpatient neurophysiology consultations, while working closely with nationally recognized faculty in epilepsy, neuromuscular medicine, and clinical neurophysiology. The program emphasizes clinical excellence, mentorship, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Trainees interested in comprehensive epilepsy training are strongly encouraged to pursue a two-year training pathway, consisting of one year of Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship followed by one year of Epilepsy fellowship. This pathway allows fellows to further develop expertise in epilepsy diagnosis, advanced EEG interpretation, and epilepsy surgery evaluation while continuing their training within the Mass General Brigham system.

Through this supportive academic environment, fellows develop the clinical expertise, teaching experience, and scholarly foundation necessary for careers in academic neurology, specialized clinical practice, or epilepsy-focused research.

Program Highlights

  • Comprehensive cross-institutional training across Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, two leading academic medical centers within Mass General Brigham.
  • Integration of adult and pediatric neurophysiology training, providing fellows with broad exposure to EEG interpretation, seizure disorders, and complex neurologic conditions across diverse patient populations.
  • Mentorship from nationally recognized faculty in epilepsy, clinical neurophysiology, and neuromuscular medicine.
  • Advanced training in EEG, EMG, and neurophysiologic diagnostics, including epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) experience and continuous inpatient EEG monitoring.
  • Exposure to diverse clinical environments, including additional clinical experience at affiliated sites such as the VA Boston Healthcare System.
  • Encouraged two-year training pathway (CNP → Epilepsy) for fellows seeking advanced epilepsy expertise.
  • Collaborative academic environment within the Mass General Brigham system and the broader Harvard Medical School community.

Requirements

Applicants must have completed an ACGME-accredited residency in neurology, child neurology, or neurodevelopmental disabilities and must be board eligible in neurology through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology at the time of entry into the program.

Applicants must be eligible for medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and have successfully completed USMLE Steps 1–3. International applicants must hold ECFMG certification, if applicable.

Applications are also welcomed from Canadian trainees who have completed an RCPSC-accredited neurology or child neurology residency.

Qualified international applicants may be eligible for J-1 visa sponsorship.

Curriculum

The Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship provides in depth training in diagnostic and clinical neurophysiology through structured clinical rotations, supervised interpretation, and multidisciplinary educational activities.

Fellows gain experience in:

Electroencephalography (EEG)

  • Routine and long-term EEG interpretation
  • Continuous EEG monitoring in inpatient and ICU settings
  • Seizure classification and electrographic analysis
  • Epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) experience

Electromyography (EMG) and Neuromuscular Diagnostics

  • Nerve conduction studies
  • Needle electromyography
  • Evaluation of neuromuscular disorders

Pediatric Neurophysiology Exposure

  • Pediatric EEG interpretation
  • Evaluation of seizure disorders in pediatric populations
  • Exposure to pediatric epilepsy monitoring and neurophysiology studies

Neurophysiology Consultations

  • Inpatient consultations involving neurophysiologic testing
  • Collaboration with neurology, neurosurgery, and critical care teams

Rotation Sites

Clinical training occurs primarily at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, with additional experience at affiliated institutions such as the VA Boston Healthcare System, allowing fellows to care for diverse patient populations and complex neurologic conditions.

Fellows also participate in weekly EEG conferences, epilepsy case conferences, and multidisciplinary neurology teaching sessions.

Many fellows elect to continue their training with a second year in the Mass General Brigham Epilepsy Fellowship, creating a two-year advanced training experience focused on epilepsy management, advanced EEG interpretation, and epilepsy surgery evaluation.

Research Experience

While the fellowship is primarily focused on clinical training, fellows are strongly encouraged to participate in clinical, translational, or educational research during their training year.

The Department of Neurology at Mass General Brigham provides fellows with access to extensive research infrastructure and mentorship from faculty engaged in a wide range of investigations in epilepsy, clinical neurophysiology, neuromuscular disease, neuroimaging, and neuromodulation.

Fellows may participate in ongoing research projects or develop independent scholarly work in collaboration with faculty mentors.

Opportunities include:

  • Clinical epilepsy and EEG research
  • Neurophysiology signal analysis and monitoring technologies
  • Neuromuscular disease and EMG studies
  • Outcomes research and quality improvement initiatives
  • Medical education research

Fellows are encouraged to present their work at regional and national conferences and to submit manuscripts for publication.

How to Apply

The Mass General Brigham Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Program participates in the NRMP Match.
Applications are submitted through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service).

A complete application typically includes:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Personal statement / letter of intent
  • Three letters of recommendation from professional references
  • USMLE transcript
  • Documentation of neurology residency training

Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a virtual interview with program leadership and faculty.

Applicants must also register for the NRMP Match and follow NRMP timelines for ranking and match participation.
