Mass General Brigham EEG Fellowship
Overview
The Department of Neurology at Massachusetts General Brigham (MGB) offers the Mass General Brigham EEG Fellowship, an advanced training program designed for physicians seeking specialized expertise in electroencephalography and epilepsy care.
This non-ACGME fellowship provides a flexible and individualized training experience focused on advanced EEG interpretation and the neurophysiologic evaluation of patients with epilepsy and other neurologic disorders. Fellows train across Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, gaining exposure to high-volume epilepsy monitoring units, inpatient neurology services, and neurocritical care environments.
The fellowship emphasizes advanced EEG interpretation, long-term video-EEG monitoring, continuous EEG monitoring in critically ill patients, and multidisciplinary epilepsy care. Fellows work closely with internationally recognized faculty in epilepsy, neurophysiology, and neurosurgery while developing expertise in the diagnosis and management of complex seizure disorders.
The program also offers the opportunity to design an individualized training experience, which may include protected time for research—such as for trainees with UE5-funded research programs—or focused training in specialized areas of clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy.
Through this immersive academic environment, fellows develop the clinical expertise, technical skills, and scholarly foundation needed for careers in academic neurology, advanced EEG interpretation, epilepsy care, and neurophysiology research.
Program Highlights

Requirements
Prior to starting fellowship, applicants must have completed a residency program in neurology, child neurology, or neurodevelopment disabilities or equivalent international training program
Applicants are also required to successfully complete USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3.
Applicants must be eligible for medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. International applicants must hold ECFMG certification, if applicable, and qualified applicants may be eligible for J-1 visa sponsorship.
Curriculum
The EEG Fellowship provides advanced training in electroencephalography and neurophysiologic monitoring through supervised interpretation, clinical experience, and multidisciplinary education.
Fellows gain experience in:
- Electroencephalography (EEG)
- Routine EEG interpretation
- Long-term and ambulatory EEG monitoring
- Continuous EEG monitoring in inpatient and ICU settings
- Identification and classification of electrographic seizures and epileptiform patterns
Epilepsy Monitoring
- Video-EEG monitoring in epilepsy monitoring units
- Correlation of electrographic findings with clinical seizure events
- Evaluation of complex seizure disorders
Educational Conferences
- Weekly EEG and epilepsy conferences
- Neurology Grand Rounds and multidisciplinary case discussions
- Teaching opportunities with neurology residents and trainees
The fellowship is designed to provide a flexible and individualized training experience, allowing fellows to focus on specific areas of interest such as advanced EEG interpretation, epilepsy care, neurocritical care monitoring, or research.
Research Experience
Although the fellowship emphasizes clinical EEG training, fellows are encouraged to participate in clinical, translational, or basic science research related to epilepsy and neurophysiology.
The Department of Neurology at Mass General Brigham supports research in areas such as:
