Overview

The Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship is a one-year ACGME-accredited training program in Electromyography (EMG) and neuromuscular medicine. Fellows receive training in the diagnosis and management of a variety of neuromuscular disorders in adults and children. Intensive training in electrodiagnostic testing, nerve/muscle biopsy, nerve ultrasound, and single fiber EMG are offered. This fellowship is a joint program of Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, with the BWH rotation including training at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Harvard Medical School/Mass General Brigham Neurology offers six positions annually. Upon completion, trainees are eligible to sit for the Neuromuscular Medicine Subspecialty Boards (ABPN) and the Electrodiagnostic Medicine Boards (ABEM). The six fellows divide into two cohorts and rotate in three-month blocks between MGH and BWH/Children’s Hospital.

Requirements

  • Completed ACGME-accredited adult neurology, pediatric neurology, or physiatry residency training program.
  • Eligible for medical licensure in Massachusetts.

Curriculum

The curriculum includes a yearlong faculty-run lecture series providing weekly lectures on EMG and neuromuscular medicine, a weekly nerve/muscle biopsy conference, a weekly EMG waveform conference at MGH, and monthly journal clubs.

Research Experience

Fellows are expected to complete at least one academic project during the fellowship year, performed under the mentorship of a faculty member in the Division of Neuromuscular Medicine. Fellows are encouraged to publish their work and/or present at national meetings if they desire.

How to Apply

The program participates in the common Neuromuscular fellowship application timeline in conjunction with the AANEM/AAN and the neuromuscular fellowship match. The AANEM online match portal opens January 1 each year. Applications are reviewed beginning March 1, with interviews occuring in March, April, and May. Applicants must apply the year prior to the desired start of their fellowship (e.g. in January-March 2026 for the fellowship class beginning July 2027). All interviews are conducted virtually.
