Overview
The Anne B. Young Neuroscience Translational Medicine Fellowship is a collaborative training program between Massachusetts General Hospital and Biogen designed to prepare neurologists and psychiatrists for careers in translational neuroscience and therapeutic development. The program provides exposure to the full lifecycle of therapy development, combining academic and industry perspectives to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders.
Fellows work closely with mentors at both Mass General and Biogen and develop independent research projects focused on translational neuroscience and clinical therapeutics. Through this experience, trainees gain insight into key aspects of drug development, including biomarker discovery, clinical trial design, regulatory science, and therapeutic strategy.
The fellowship emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and aims to train clinician-scientists who can bridge academic research and industry innovation to advance treatments for neurological disease.
Requirements
Applicants should meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Physician-scientist who is board-certified or board-eligible in neurology or psychiatry
- Current fellow or junior faculty member in neurology or psychiatry
- Ability to commit approximately 50% effort at Biogen and 50% at Mass General during the fellowship
Applicants from institutions outside of Mass General are encouraged to apply.
Curriculum
The fellowship provides immersive training in translational neuroscience and therapeutic development through collaboration between academic and industry research environments.
Key components include:
- Participation in translational neuroscience research projects
- Exposure to drug development strategy and therapeutic selection
- Training in biomarker discovery and validation
- Experience with clinical trial design, operations, and regulatory science
- Mentorship from faculty at both Mass General and Biogen
Fellows spend time at both institutions and work closely with multidisciplinary teams involved in neuroscience drug development.
Research Experience
Each fellow develops an independent research project under the guidance of a mentoring committee that includes at least one mentor from Mass General and one from Biogen. Fellows are expected to present their work at regular meetings and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
Research topics may include translational neuroscience, biomarker development, therapeutic development, or innovative approaches to clinical trial methodology.
How to Apply
Applicants should submit the following materials:
- Letter of interest describing career goals)
- Curriculum vitae (CV)
- Completed application form
- Three letters of support
- NIH Other Support documentation for current and pending grants (if applicable)
- ECFMG certificate for international graduates (if applicable)
Applications should be submitted electronically as a single PDF to the program coordinator. Applications are reviewed confidentially.
