BWH Benign Gynecology Fellowship

Overview

The Complex Benign Gynecology – CBG (formerly MIGS) fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital aims to prepare trainees to take on the role of an academic surgeon ready to assume leadership roles within the minimally invasive gynecologic surgery community. Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a high volume academic medical center and a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. The fellowship program offers advanced training with a dedicated focus on the surgical management of complex endometriosis and uterine fibroids. Through a comprehensive curriculum that combines clinical excellence, surgical mastery, and evidence-based care, fellows will develop the skills needed to address the most complex cases with precision and compassion.

The fellow will rotate primarily with the core CBG faculty at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, gaining expertise in the use of all minimally invasive modalities: conventional laparoscopy, robotic platform, and hysteroscopy. In addition, a Urogynecology rotation provides exposure and training in routine and complex vaginal procedures. The fellow will have the opportunity to learn less commonly performed procedures such as laparoscopic abdominal cerclage and transcervical fibroid ablation. A unique experience aiming to expand the fellow’s exposure to different approaches is a month-long “fellowship swap” with the Newton Wellesley CBG fellowship program, also in Boston. Rounding up the training experience are Pain clinic and Ultrasound rotations.

A cornerstone of this fellowship is its emphasis on advancing the field through impactful research. Fellows will engage in cutting-edge investigations aimed at defining new standards of care, improving patient outcomes, and expanding the understanding of minimally invasive surgical techniques for benign gynecologic conditions. To support this concept, the fellow will have an opportunity to obtain a fully funded Master of Public Health (MPH) degree through the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Clinical Effectiveness Program. This unique program prepares physicians for clinical research responsibilities and for leadership roles in evaluating and improving all aspects of health care delivery. By collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, fellows will have the opportunity to contribute to high-quality research projects that influence clinical practice and shape the future of the specialty. There are ample research and teaching opportunities within BWH and through Harvard Medical School. The fellow is expected to complete a minimum of two clinical research projects to be presented at national meetings and published in peer-reviewed journals. The program is committed to cultivating elite academic surgeons and future leaders in Complex Benign Gynecology.
