Overview

For nearly two centuries, the Brigham and Mass General have advanced women’s health and trained future leaders in obstetrics and gynecology.

These hospitals pioneered:

  • The first women’s hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School
  • Early use of antiseptic technique and anesthesia during childbirth
  • The first cancer ward for women and the first Pap smear evaluation clinic
  • Philanthropic leadership through the women-led Vincent Club

In 2025, five Mass General Brigham institutions were ranked among the top hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was ranked #1 in the nation for the fourth consecutive year.

Requirements

You can find our residency requirements at the FREIDA website.

Curriculum

Residents rotate across the Brigham, Mass General, and community partners including Boston Children’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, and Newton-Wellesley Hospital, gaining exposure to high-acuity tertiary care and community practice.

This integrated structure offers:

  • Broad patient volume and case diversity
  • Deep subspecialty mentorship
  • A balance between academic and community practice
  • Opportunities for research and innovation in women’s health

Residents gain comprehensive experience in both obstetrics and gynecology. Across hospitals, they participate in more than 10,000 deliveries annually, including high-risk maternal care and critical-care-capable labor and delivery units. Surgical training spans all major subspecialties with progressive responsibility under faculty supervision.

A longitudinal continuity clinic from PGY-2 to PGY-4 allows residents to build lasting patient relationships and experience the full spectrum of women’s health across life stages.

Sample rotations

PGY-1: Core OB/GYN, ambulatory, medicine

PGY-2: High-risk OB, family planning, REI, pediatric/adolescent GYN, SICU

PGY-3: High-risk OB, oncology, community GYN, research or global health

PGY-4: Chief resident roles (BWH & MGH), operative/ultrasound, jeopardy

Residents also participate in ambulatory OB and weekly gynecology continuity clinics, with exposure to infertility, oncology, urogynecology, menopause, and high-risk obstetrics.

Research Experience

The program fosters a culture of inquiry and innovation. Residents pursue mentored projects in:

  • Clinical, translational, and basic science research
  • Public health and health systems studies

Each resident completes at least one project and presents at Resident Research Day. Many publish or present nationally.

PGY-3 residents receive a protected research block, which may also be used for a global health elective. Funding is provided for residents presenting at national meetings.
