Overview

Starting July 1st, 2027, subspecialty training in Women’s and Perinatal / Gynecologic and Obstetric Pathology will be offered at both Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), as a combined Mass General Brigham (MGB) Fellowship in Gynecologic and Obstetric Pathology. This fellowship will be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

The fellowship is offered as a 12-month comprehensive educational experience aimed to train anatomic pathologists as experts in the field of gynecologic and obstetric pathology. Fellows will train equally at both BWH and MGH under the guidance of experts in the fields of gynecologic, obstetric and perinatal, and molecular pathology. Fellows will actively participate as members of the clinical team in a variety of educational activities including robust in-house and consultation clinical services, subspecialized intraoperative consultation, clinical and translational research, and quality improvement initiatives.

The fellowship offers robust clinical training through exposure to a wide range of cases. The BWH and MGH gynecologic and obstetric pathology services evaluate over 30,000 cases, which include:

  • In-house surgical pathology specimens (biopsies and resections) from both general gynecology and gynecologic oncology specialties.
  • In-house placental and perinatal specimens including over 50 perinatal autopsies, 100 fetopsies, gravid hysterectomies, and placentas from all gestational periods.
  • External cases referred to our centers for continuation of care at BWH, MGH, the MGB Cancer Center, and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
  • Consultations referred to our centers for expert second opinion.
  • Cases for prognostic and/or predictive biomarker testing.

As part of the clinical training, fellows will continuously interact with gynecologic oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gynecologists, and obstetricians, and will lead case discussion at the weekly interdisciplinary tumor board conferences. They will also participate in cytology-biopsy correlation conferences. A year-long curriculum, comprising didactic lectures, dedicated slide sessions for fellows, and journal clubs, will be offered. Other expectations include education of residents, medical students, and observers, and participation in clinical and translational research with completion of at least one research project by the end of the training. Presentation at national and international scientific meetings is encouraged.

Candidates who desire more dedicated training in obstetric and perinatal pathology (up to 60% of the academic year) are welcome to apply and can be accommodated. Likewise, candidates and active fellows can also apply for a second year of fellowship training focused on basic, translational and/or clinical research, as well as independent clinical responsibilities at the instructor level.

Requirements

Applicants must have satisfactorily completed residency training in anatomic pathology or anatomic & clinical pathology. A track record demonstrating interest in gynecologic and obstetric pathology is expected (documented through prior elective rotations during post-graduate training, clinical research, abstract presentations, and peer-reviewed publications, among others).

How to Apply

We currently have no opening available for academic year 2027-2028. Starting with academic year 2028-2029, the MGB Gynecologic & Obstetric Pathology Fellowship Program will join the NRMP match for gynecologic pathology fellowships in the United States.

Interested applicants can find more information about required documentation and timeline in the Association of Directors of Anatomic and Subspecialty Pathology (ADASP) website.

Following ADASP and NRMP timeline, applicants must send the below required documents to mgbpathologyfellowships@mgb.org:

  • CAP Standardized Pathology Fellowship Application.
  • Up to date Curriculum Vitae (must be in date/year format 00/0000).
  • Personal Statement describing career goals and interest in the specialty.
