Advanced Reconstruction, Microsurgery, and Peripheral Nerve Fellowship

The Advanced Reconstruction, Microsurgery, and Peripheral Nerve Fellowship within the MGB Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery provides comprehensive training in the evaluation, surgical management, and advanced reconstruction encompassing “head-to-toe” general reconstruction cases through complex microsurgery and/or peripheral nerve injuries and disorders. The fellowship offers extensive experience in complex flap procedures, including pedicle and free tissue transfers, nerve reconstruction, wound management, and other techniques spanning traumatic, oncologic, and pediatric patient populations for head and neck, truncal, abdominal, and upper as well as lower extremities, with the goal of restoring form and function while improving quality of life for patients with complex conditions.

Overview

The 12-month Advanced Reconstruction, Microsurgery, and Peripheral Nerve Fellowship provides high-volume clinical experience in all aspects of complex and general reconstruction, microsurgery, and peripheral nerve surgery, including nerve decompression, nerve repair, nerve grafting, nerve transfers, free flaps, and functional reconstruction.

The fellowship emphasizes the comprehensive management of patients with traumatic, oncologic, and congenital/pediatric injuries and/or defects. Fellows will gain experience in patient evaluation, surgical planning, operative techniques, and longitudinal postoperative care while working within a multidisciplinary environment. The fellow will experience a balance of outpatient clinic, inpatient consultations, and operative cases along with research opportunities.

Requirements

Applicants must have completed an accredited plastic surgery, orthopaedic, or neurosurgery residency or equivalent surgical training program.

Curriculum

Training follows an apprenticeship model, providing fellows with close mentorship and direct operative experience with faculty specializing in complex reconstruction, microsurgery, and peripheral nerve surgery. Fellows participate in the full spectrum of clinical care, including outpatient evaluation, surgical decision-making, operative management, and postoperative follow-up while also serving in “junior attending” decision-making experiences.

The fellowship provides opportunities to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across MGB, including neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, surgical oncology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and other specialties involved in the care of patients with complex reconstruction and nerve injuries.

Research Experience

The MGB Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery maintains an active clinical and translational research program. Fellows are encouraged to participate in research initiatives related to complex reconstruction, microsurgery, and peripheral nerve injury, nerve regeneration, functional restoration, and outcomes-based care. Opportunities are available for clinical research, innovation, and academic presentations.
