Overview
The clinical nutrition support fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a one-year fellowship for physicians who have completed their medical residency or at least three years of general surgery residency training. Physicians completing fellowships in gastroenterology, critical care medicine, primary care, or anesthesia with a critical care focus are also encouraged to apply. At the end of training, the fellow is expected to sit for the ASPEN examination and become a Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC).
Requirements
- Completed medical residency or at least three years of general surgery residency.
- Physicians in or having completed fellowships in GI, critical care, primary care, or anesthesia also eligible.
Curriculum
Fellows develop clinical expertise in caring for complex inpatients and outpatients requiring nutrition support. Training includes managing short- and long-term parenteral and enteral nutrition, prevention and management of venous catheter and feeding tube complications, and evidence-based care of nutrition-dependent and critically ill patients. Clinical exposure spans medical and surgical ICU, burn/trauma unit, cardiothoracic ICU, NICU, transplant service, and other inpatient settings, plus an ambulatory practice of approximately 30 outpatients.
Research Experience
Collaboration with BWH Center for Surgery and Public Health (CSPH) for research opportunities.
