The Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School Abdominal Organ Transplant Fellowship is an American Society of Transplant Surgery-accredited, two-year fellowship for surgeons seeking advanced training in the field of transplant surgery. The transplant surgical fellow leads the clinical team under direct guidance of surgical and medical transplant attending staff, including multidisciplinary rounds with pharmacy, consulting services, case management, social work, APPs, and general surgery residents.

Requirements

  • Completed general surgery or urology residency by fellowship start date.
  • Eligible for Massachusetts medical license.
  • USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3 passed.

Curriculum

Clinical training covers all aspects of organ transplantation, including outpatient clinic management, selection conference, histocompatibility and crossmatching, and transplant pathology. Educational conferences include Russell Rounds (Wednesdays), Transplant Conference (Fridays), Transplant Grand Rounds, and weekly Imaging and Listing conferences. The ASTS Academic Universe curriculum modules complement clinical activities.

Research Experience

Mass General, Harvard Medical School, and the greater Boston area provide a rich environment to pursue basic science or clinical transplant research. Through the Center for Transplantation Sciences fellows have the opportunity to pursue research in basic, translational, and clinical research, transplant outcomes research, and health services research. Resources to assist with grant writing, research, and manuscript preparation are available through the Mass General and Harvard Medical School.
