Surgical Critical Care/Acute Care Surgery Fellowship

The MGH Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery Fellowship is a two-year program: Year 1 is ACGME-accredited SICU training and Year 2 is AAST-approved acute care surgery, at a high-volume Level I trauma center.

Overview

Under the direction of Program Director Jonathan Parks, MD, the Massachusetts General Hospital postgraduate Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery (SCC/ACS) Fellowship is designed to allow fellows to develop advanced proficiency in the management of all aspects of critically ill surgical patients. MGH is a Level I adult trauma, Level I pediatric trauma, and Level I burn center, managing 2,500 adult trauma patients and 2,000 non-trauma emergency surgery patients annually.

Requirements

  • American Board Certification/Eligibility in General Surgery
  • Applications through SAFAS (Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery Fellowship Application Service); deadline June 15 annually

Curriculum

Year 1 (ACGME-accredited): Fellows work alongside surgical and anesthesia intensivists in the SICU. Electives in pediatric surgical care, neurocritical care, burns, and other complex critical illness (3 months). Two positions offered through NRMP.

Year 2 (AAST-approved): Focused on trauma and complex emergency general surgery with an optional four-week rotation at Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa. Additional damage-control training in orthopaedics, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, burns, and pediatric surgery.

Research Experience

The fellowship focuses on trauma system development, quality improvement, and research. The Division of Trauma, Emergency Surgery and Surgical Critical Care has a robust laboratory and clinical research program.
