Colorectal Surgery Research Fellowship

The MGH Colorectal Surgery Research Fellowship is a one-year program educating and inspiring the next generation of surgeon-scientists in study design, research methods, and diseases of the colon and rectum.

Overview

The Colorectal Surgery Research Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital is a one-year program that aims to educate and inspire the next generation of surgeon-scientists interested in becoming skilled in surgically treating diseases of the colon and rectum as well as study design and research methods. The MGH colorectal surgery team is comprised of national leaders in health services research, clinical trials investigation, and translational research.

Curriculum

Trainees meet with their mentor(s) weekly to discuss and plan research projects and interact with other faculty twice a month during research meetings and didactics. At the beginning of the program, trainees meet with fellowship co-director Christy Cauley, MD, MPH, to be paired with one or more personal faculty mentors.

Research Experience

By the end of the fellowship, trainees will:

  • Understand how to expertly design clinical studies.
  • Grasp the ethical implications of research.
  • Obtain experience in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research.
  • Learn project management and research communication through presentations and publications.

Current projects include intervention development and testing of digital therapeutics to improve communication with patients undergoing major colorectal surgery, clinical trials in advanced cancer patients, and clinical trials in patients with Crohn’s disease.

Remote interviews take place in February and March. Acceptance confirmation by April 1.
