Department of Dermatology Research

The Department of Dermatology conducts cutting-edge research that has provided fundamental insights into the biology of human skin disease.

Clinical Research Program at BWH

Our investigators study the epidemiology, biologic mechanisms, and safety & efficacy of novel therapies. We have made substantial advances in skin cancer & cutaneous inflammatory disorders research, promoted evidence based medicine, and changed disease staging paradigms.

The Clinical Research Program is designed to improve our understanding and care of patients with dermatologic disease and to provide an unparalleled environment for collaborative, clinical/translational research that supports the academic growth of our clinical faculty. Projects have changed the paradigm of dermatologic care, establishing new staging systems in nonmelanoma skin cancer, analyzing cost effectiveness of various treatments, and developing novel clinical assessment tools and patient reported outcome measures.

The Program provides education, shared core support resources, mentorship and faculty development, group project review / feedback, and facilitates internal and external collaboration (with basic science groups, other groups using novel methodologies in clinical science and cross-disciplinary efforts with other BWH departments).

Basic and Translational Research at BWH

From studying stem cell biology to the responses of cancer patients to immunotherapy, BWH Dermatology research is driving the creation of new knowledge. Our research topics are varied, but our commitment to helping patients is universal.

Research in the BWH Department of Dermatology is driven by a team of talented, innovative, and collaborative faculty members who are committed to making the world a better, more equitable place for people with skin disease. With $9 million per year in NIH funding, our 9 NIH funded Principal Investigators are producing fundamental insights into stem cell biology, innate and acquired immune responses, skin cancers, and inflammatory skin diseases while providing a supportive, compassionate environment to train the next generation of physicians and scientists.

Clinical Trials & The Clinical Unit for Research Innovation and Trials (CUReIT) at BWH

The Clinical Unit for Research Innovation and Trials (CUReIT) supports observational and interventional clinical studies across the breadth of the development spectrum. In the context of world-renowned disease state and cutaneous immunology expertise, we offer a unique opportunity for translational research that includes clinical outcome measure development, study consulting and trials support from proof-of-concept through registrational / Phase III studies and post-marketing registry and phase IV endeavors. We are able to utilize central Institutional Review Board (IRB) for a subset of industry-sponsored studies and master agreements are often in place to facilitate study startup. We have emphasized investigator-initiated studies to support the academic work and expertise of our faculty and allow innovation within the field.
