Kathy Garrett Research Center for ALS

The Kathy Garrett Research Center for ALS is dedicated to accelerating discoveries and developing new therapies for ALS, bringing together basic science, clinical research, and innovative trial design.

Overview

The Kathy Garrett Research Center for ALS is a dedicated research collective established through a transformational estate gift to accelerate discoveries and develop new therapies for ALS, bringing together basic science, clinical research, and innovative trial design. It supports scientists and clinicians through endowed positions, early career scholar programs, flexible research funding, and collaborative initiatives—all focused on moving promising ideas more quickly from the lab to patients.

Kathy Garrett Endowed ALS Clinical Research Scholars

The Kathy Garrett Endowed ALS Clinical Research Scholars provides support for early-career clinician-scientists with great ideas for therapies or research approaches, who need mentoring, connections and opportunities to shape ideas. The ALS Scholars will work closely with experienced Mass General Brigham faculty to create innovative trial designs and approaches that will accelerate, target and improve how treatments are tested for people with ALS and related disorders.

Kathy Garrett Visiting Scholar Program

This opportunity offers a scientist from anywhere in the world to come to Mass General Brigham and spend time working on a research project within the supportive environment of Mass General Brigham, with mentoring and collaborative opportunities. The goal is to encourage a free flow of ideas and invite courageous, forward-thinking innovators from across disciplines to make game-changing discoveries in ALS that directly help people. The program will invite investigators from across disciplines to attract the best minds to solving challenges in ALS. Scholars will be chosen by our Healey & AMG Center Scientific Advisory Council, and will be supported for one year at Mass General Brigham, with the option to continue some level of support at the home institution in the following year.

Kathy Garrett Endowed Chairs

The Kathy Garrett Endowed Chairs honor faculty members as pivotal leaders in ALS. Endowed chairs are the highest honor we can award our faculty, and recognize outstanding contributions to patient care, research and education. The Kathy Garrett Endowed Chairs provide critical, flexible resources as the incumbents lead cross-disciplinary initiatives that increase our understanding of ALS and related motor neuron and neurodegenerative diseases. The current chairs include Dr. Sabrina Paganoni, Robert H. Brown, Jr., DPhil, MD Endowed Chair in Neurology, and Dr. Ghazaleh Sadri-Vakili, Kathy Garrett Endowed Chair in Neurology.
