Pediatric Otolaryngology Research

Mass Eye and Ear has a team of fellowship trained pediatric otolaryngologists who, in addition to their clinical obligations, conduct research on leading ear, nose, and throat-related diseases that affect infants, children, and young adults.

Overview

Thanks to a wide range of funding sources, including government and private donors, pediatric ear, nose, and throat (ENT) research at Mass Eye and Ear has resulted in significant breakthroughs and innovations that have advanced medical and surgical treatment.

Some of our accomplishments include:

  • Advances in ear reconstruction for children with microtia and other congenital ear malformations
  • Contributions in the treatment of newborn airway anomalies and adolescent voice problems
  • Advances in the correction of childhood hearing loss including cochlear implantation
  • Management of hemangiomas and vascular anomalies

Research Projects

  • Understanding immune-microenvironment of JRRP to uncover immunotherapy for the disease
  • Exploring th natural history of unilateral large vestibular aqueduct as the source of hearing loss and modifying current rehabilitation recommendations
  • Studying the natural history of hearing loss associated with cytomegalovirus and recommendations for rehabilitation
  • Implementating a Partners Biobank
  • Implementating and maintaining a Pediatric Hearing Loss Registry
  • Investigating the functional near-red infraspectroscopy for evaluation of language delay and associated behavioral disorders in children with hearing loss
  • Developing structured data input for creation of clinical registries
