Overview
Within Mass General Brigham for Children’s Department of Pediatrics is the Division of General Pediatrics, an internationally known academic research division dedicated to improving the health of children and adolescents through clinical, population, intervention, and policy-related research.
Areas of excellence include prevention and reduction of the burden of chronic disease among children; reduction and elimination of disparities in children’s health and healthcare; and improving the health of populations across the lifecourse. The Division has a strong focus on healthy weight and the prevention of obesity, children and families affected by substance use disorder, smoking cessation, newborn medicine, HIV, adolescent health, family resiliency, health equity, mental health, children with developmental conditions, health policy, food security, and physical activity.
Karen Kuhlthau, PhD, is the current Division Chief.

Karen Kuhlthau, PhD, Division Chief
Dr. Kuhlthau is Professor of Pediatrics her research focusses on health services, quality of life, resiliency outcomes for families and children with chronic conditions and disabilities.
Janine Bernardo, MD, MPH
Dr. Bernardo is an attending at the MGBfC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Her research considers health services and outcomes research with a focus on vulnerable populations and father’s participation in care.
Alexy Arauz Boudreau, MD, MPH
Dr. Boudreau is an academic community pediatrician whose work focuses on improving the health of vulnerable populations through primary care re-design, research, and community initiatives.
Jessica Calihan, MD
Dr. Calihan is board certified in pediatrics and internal medicine and her research focuses on preventing substance use by adolescents with family history.
Lauren Fiechtner, MD, MPH
Dr. Fiechtner is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist who conducts research on interventions to prevent childhood obesity and promote healthy weight.
Anisha Gundewar, MD, MPH
Dr. Gundewar is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist with an interest in food security and healthy weight.
Anne Neilan, MD, MPH
Dr. Neilan is a medicine and pediatrics-trained infectious disease doctor whose research interests include using simulation modeling to inform policy-relevant care strategies for adolescents and young adults with HIV and at risk of HIV.
Davida Schiff, MD, MSc
Dr. Schiff is a general academic pediatrician, addiction medicine physician and health services researcher. Her work focuses on improving care for families impacted by substance use disorder.
Rachel Whooten, MD
Dr. Whooten is a Pediatric Endocrinologist with a research interest in physical activity and obesity prevention interventions.
Jonathan Winickoff, MD, MPH
Dr. Winickoff is a Professor of Pediatrics whose research focuses on strategies to address tobacco use and exposure in families.
