Newborn Medicine Research

Newborn Medicine Research Areas of Focus

Neonatal Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, and Integrated Biology

This research area includes several laboratories focused on basic and translational discoveries related to neonatal pulmonary and cardiovascular disorders, including bronchopulmonary dysplasia and pulmonary hypertension, as well as neonatal sepsis.

Pediatric, Newborn and Fetal Developmental Neuroscience

Investigators in the Brigham Infant Brain Studies (BIBS) Laboratory use multimodal approaches to study the developing fetal and newborn brain. Their work includes monitoring newborn brain function, assessing and optimizing early neurosensory exposures, developing neuroprotective strategies and therapies, advancing fetal and neonatal neuroimaging, and evaluating neurodevelopmental outcomes in high-risk infants throughout early childhood.

Parent Mental Health and Child Development

This group studies the psychosocial experiences of families, with a focus on identifying risk and protective factors that influence parent mental health and child development outcomes.

Global Advancement of Infants and Mothers (AIM)

The Global AIM Laboratory conducts research to improve maternal and infant health worldwide, with a focus on preventing preterm birth and fetal growth restriction, improving nutrition and care for vulnerable infants, and assessing early neurodevelopment in resource-constrained settings. The team also studies human milk composition and maternal micronutrient supplementation and collaborates with organizations such as the World Health Organization to inform global maternal and child health policy.

Newborn Genomic Medicine

This program oversees state-mandated, supplemental, and research newborn screening, as well as diagnostic sequencing initiatives. Its work seeks to expand access, shorten turnaround times, reduce costs, and incorporate artificial intelligence-based interpretation of next-generation sequencing results through innovative optimization of sequencing technologies and pipelines.

Nutrition for Mothers and Infants

Researchers in this area investigate how maternal and infant nutritional intake and status influence health outcomes in newborns, growing infants, and children.
