Acute Brain Injury Research Laboratory

The Whalen laboratory seeks to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive outcome after traumatic brain injury and intracerebral hemorrhage. We are especially interested in the role of interleukin-1 receptor-1 and receptor interacting kinase-1 signaling and how these pathways cause postinjury cognitive dysfunction.

Overview

The Whalen laboratory explores the molecular basis of impaired functional outcome and neurodegeneration in experimental models of cerebral contusion, repetitive concussion, and intracerebral hemorrhage. Our goal is to discover novel disease driver mechanisms and develop new therapies to improve the chances of neurological recovery and prevent neurodegeneration later in life.
