Overview

The Rhee Laboratory is focused on characterizing novel metabolic and anabolic functions of the kidney and multi-omic integration in clinical cohorts to study kidney disease. These studies have led to the identification of kidney glycolysis as a mammalian phosphate sensor, providing new insight on phosphate homeostasis and energy metabolism in health and disease. In addition, this research has identified select proteins and metabolites that serve as both markers and mediators of other aspects of kidney disease, including in podocytes and the tubulointerstitium. Building on this work, our goal is to develop new therapies for chronic kidney disease and its complications, including in bone and the cardiovascular system.
