Overview
Pain affects a staggering number of Americans—over 100 million people; it is also the most prevalent reason Americans seek access to health care. Patients living with chronic pain often suffer from compounded challenges: 75% report low energy, nearly 80% report depression, and more than 85% report inability to sleep. Yet, traditional methods for treating chronic pain are often palliative, fostering unhealthy opioid dependencies rather than addressing the root of pain directly.
At the Schoen Adams Discovery Center for Chronic Pain Recovery, researchers are using the latest imaging technologies to better understand the underlying mechanisms of chronic pain. They are also driving the development and testing of a variety of innovative strategies for pain management and narcotic reduction, including virtual reality, psychedelics, acupuncture, cognitive behavioral therapy, and non-invasive brain stimulation.
