Spaulding Neuromodulation Center

The Spaulding Neuromodulation Center, within Harvard’s Department of PM&R and the Spaulding Research Institute, investigates noninvasive brain stimulation techniques like TMS, tDCS, and TUS. Using neurophysiological measures like EEG, the center explores mechanisms of action to advance clinical applications in rehabilitation and pain modulation.

Overview

The Neuromodulation Laboratory, part of the Spaulding Neuromodulation Center at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, focuses on developing and optimizing noninvasive brain stimulation techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TUS). Our research focuses on modulating neural circuits to improve motor function, learning, and functional independence in conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury.

Current Research, Academic Scope & Clinical Innovations

The Spaulding Neuromodulation Center drives innovation through diverse clinical trials focused on chronic pain, mental health, and neurological recovery. Our current projects investigate optimized tDCS for fibromyalgia and carpal tunnel syndrome, alongside machine-learning-supported remote therapies for phantom limb pain. We are also advancing treatment for addiction, stroke rehabilitation, and Parkinson’s disease through cutting-edge techniques like Transcranial Pulse Stimulation (TPS). As a hub for academic collaboration, the lab hosts students from the U.S. and abroad and maintains a close synergy with Harvard Medical School, Harvard T.H. Chan’s MPH & PPCR program and other universities in the Boston/Cambridge area.
