Overview

Research in general and gastrointestinal surgery at Mass General Brigham has a rich history of transformative discovery that dates back to the 1940’s and has shaped modern surgical care. From foundational advances in the body’s composition of electrolytes, the metabolic response to surgery, and pioneering work in total parenteral nutrition to innovations in minimally invasive and metabolic surgery, our surgeons have been at the forefront of improving the care of surgical disease. Today, our division’s research efforts continue to focus on surgery broadly, but with a particular focus on metabolic disease, foregut disorders, and complex abdominal wall and hernia.

Our research enterprise includes basic, translational and clinical, as well as health services and public policy work in collaboration with Harvard School of Public Health, supported by both federal, industry, and philanthropic funding. We collaborate closely with investigators across Mass General Brigham and researchers locally and globally.  With our multidisciplinary expertise, our surgeons are discovering and developing therapies, technologies, and models of care that will improve outcomes and shape the future of gastrointestinal surgery.

Laboratory for Surgical and Metabolic Research

Led by Eric Sheu, MD, PhD and Ali Tavakkoli, MD, the Laboratory for Surgical and Metabolic Research continues its century old tradition of pioneering work in surgical metabolism, with a current focus on the molecular connections between the intestine, gut luminal factors (microbiota, bile acids, metabolites), and the immune system.

Gut Bioenginnering Laboratory

Led by Nima Saeidi PhD, the Gut Bioenginnering Laboratory focuses on defining how mechanical cues and metabolic pathways converge to regulate intestinal stem cell (ISC) function, and how disruption of this mechanometabolic axis drives disease.

Integrated multi-omics Lab

Led by Amy Tsurumi, PhD, the team integrate 'omics’ (transcriptomics, epigenomics, and proteomics) and electronic health record datasets, and apply machine learning to analyze data.

Surgical Data Science and Informatics Lab

Led By Thomas Shin, MD, PhD, the team applying computational methods to turn intraoperative and population-based surgical data into insight that answers questions across the surgical care pathway.

Fellowship and Training

We have trained surgeon-scientists and PhD investigators from around the world, many of whom have gone on to successful academic careers. Trainees benefit from a collaborative environment that integrates basic science, translational research, and clinical investigation within one of the world's leading academic medical centers.

Trainees are supported by an NIH-funded T32 Training Program in Alimentary Tract Surgery. The lab has also maintained a longstanding partnership with the East of England (Cambridge) Surgical Deanery, through which surgical trainees from the United Kingdom have pursued dedicated research training in our laboratories for decades.

We welcome inquiries from outstanding PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and highly motivated surgical trainees who are interested in pursuing careers in academic surgery and translational biomedical research.
