Discovery Center for Stroke Recovery
Overview
Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke. Globally, stroke impacts 15 million people each year. Stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability— affecting all ages, from infants to adults. Survivors can experience weakness and paralysis in one side of the body as well as impaired swallowing, and diminished thinking and communication. Yet conventional research focuses on prevention and acute treatment— leaving millions of stroke survivors and their families struggling.
Here at Spaulding, investigators are tackling the need for stroke recovery research. These innovative clinician-scientists focus on the long-term needs of stroke survivors, building knowledge and strategies to advance patient recovery and rehabilitation. As a trailblazer and a driver of research collaboration, Spaulding’s research enables clinicians to develop highly customized therapies for patients impaired by stroke.
