Overview

With nearly $80 million in funding, McLean’s research program drives innovation across dozens of laboratories and a dedicated team of more than 400 researchers. By integrating cutting-edge neuroscience with specialized clinical research, McLean ensures that laboratory breakthroughs translate directly into better patient care, keeping the institution at the forefront of mental health discovery.

Research Focus Areas

Neuroscience Research
Basic neuroscience focuses on gaining insight into the functions of different parts of the brain, what those parts control, and what can go wrong to produce a mental illness.

Divisions at McLean

McLean Hospital’s clinical and research activities are organized into divisions. These divisions integrate the hospital’s three mission elements—clinical care, research, and education—with a focus on the rapid translation of science in order to establish, deliver, and disseminate ever-better, evidence-based approaches to care. Learn about our world-class researchers for each division below.
Basic Neuroscience Division

Provides research that uncovers the biological mechanisms of mental illness through cellular and molecular brain studies, advancing discoveries toward improved treatment.

Division of Alcohol, Drugs, & Addiction

Provides comprehensive, evidence‑based care for substance use disorders across multiple settings.

Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

Provides mental health care and community support for children and teens ages 3–19 across a wide range of conditions, along with specialized education options.

Division of Depression & Anxiety Disorders

Provides research‑driven, collaborative care for depression and anxiety across all levels of treatment while advancing biological understanding of these conditions to improve therapies.

Division of Geriatric Psychiatry

Provides specialized psychiatric care and research for older adults, focusing on mood disorders and cognitive conditions to support healthier lives.

Division of Women's Mental Health

Provides specialized mental health care and research focused on women and girls across the lifespan, advancing clinical services, training, and education in this rapidly growing field.

Psychotic Disorders Division

Provides coordinated inpatient, residential, outpatient, and community care for psychotic disorders while advancing research to improve treatment, prevention, and recovery.

McLean Imaging Center

Provides cutting‑edge brain‑imaging research and technology to reveal how circuits and networks contribute to mental illness, advancing scientific discovery.

Research Centers

Provides collaborative hubs that drive scientific discovery across disciplines by developing new knowledge, technologies, and methods to advance understanding, treatment, and prevention of mental illness.
