Education and Training

Mass General Brigham is committed to training the next generation of health care professionals, and supporting lifelong learning to improve care across our system. Our two academic medical centers and three specialty hospitals are affiliated with Harvard Medical School, and our degree-granting entity, the MGH Institute of Health Professions, supports training across the health professions. Our faculty, researchers, trainees, and staff are all part of a vibrant medical community. As a core mission pillar, education is at the heart of what we do to advance health care.

Overview

Education is critical to our excellence in every area across Mass General Brigham. Because we are built on a legacy of medical discovery, our clinician-educators and researchers push the boundaries of knowledge and advance medicine in new and innovative ways that benefit our patients. From routine care to the most complex cases, we are committed to providing the highest level of care to each patient, every day.

Mass General Brigham offers exceptional training for all health professionals, from student opportunities and internships, to specialized residency and fellowship programs, to continuing and community-based education. The integrated Mass General Brigham Education Committee is organized to support our shared education and training mission across the entire health system.

Graduate Medical Education

Mass General Brigham continues a long tradition of educating the next generation of physicians, many of whom play leadership roles in all areas of medicine and health care. Accreditation is provided by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)

MGH Institute of Health Professions

As the only degree-granting member of the MGB health system, the MGH Institute of Health Professions provides students across professions with a comprehensive range of academic offerings, from prerequisites to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, as well as continuing education.

The MGH Institute has two schools: School of Nursing (SON), and School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS). Areas of study in include Audiology, Cardiac Care, Data Analytics, Genetic Counseling, Health Administration, Health Professions Education, Health Sciences, Language and Literacy, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Sciences, and Speech-Language Pathology.

The Peter L. Slavin, MD Academy for Applied Learning in Health Care

Founded in 2022 with a transformational gift from the Lunder Foundation of Portland, Maine to Massachusetts General Hospital to launch the Lunder Learning Initiative, the Slavin Academy is leading an integrated effort to harness the power of education and training across the health professions to ensure the highest quality care for every patient. The Slavin Academy is a collaborative organizational hub committed to promoting the educational mission, sustaining educational impact, invigorating the educational community, transforming the learner experience, and evaluating educational effectiveness.

The Slavin Academy is leading integration efforts with the Brigham Education Institute to support educational scholarship, teacher training, learning innovation, and community-building across our system, including shared library and museum resources.
