Overview

The Schoen Adams Research Institute at Spaulding Rehabilitation is dedicated to advancing what’s possible in rehabilitation. Our expert researchers are leading new discoveries and accelerating the delivery of treatments for patients of all ages. What makes us unique is our integration of research with patient care, which reduces the time between finding an innovative approach and applying it to help patients. Currently, we are conducting more than 200 research studies. We prioritize understanding our patients’ needs, using that insight to guide every breakthrough we achieve.

The Schoen Adams Research Institute’s five founding Discovery Centers are hubs of research excellence and innovation for priority areas in rehabilitation medicine. In addition, the Rehabilitation Outcomes Center at Spaulding enhances our treatment programs, with data-driven results often quickly finding their way to the bedside and the clinic.

Further, the Schoen Adams Research Institute at Spaulding Rehabilitation is the only institution in the country to hold all three Model System designations from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research at the same time. These extremely selective grants, which are awarded in five-year cycles, recognize clinical and research excellence in the specialty areas of spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and burn injury. Model Systems Centers are dedicated to providing coordinated systems of rehabilitation care and conducting collaborative, data-driven research on recovery and long-term outcomes.
